Bank connections

Monarch Money requires you to connect your bank accounts via Plaid to import transactions. Vaulra does not require a bank connection. You import transactions from CSV, Excel, or PDF files, and all processing happens in your browser. File contents are not uploaded to Vaulra servers.

Shared budgets and privacy

Monarch Money supports household accounts where both partners see all transactions and accounts. There are no per-category visibility controls.

Vaulra offers granular per-member visibility. Each person sees only what the budget owner has made visible to them, per envelope, per person. You can share a budget without sharing every detail of your personal spending.

Credit card expense tracking

Monarch Money tracks credit card balances through bank connections. If your bank connection breaks, your credit card data stops updating.

Vaulra tracks credit card balances without a bank connection. You tag expenses as paid with a credit card using the "Paid with" field, and the card's balance updates automatically. The dashboard shows the gap between your balance and allocated payment.

Pricing

Vaulra is free. Monarch Money is a paid subscription app after its trial period.

Monarch Money is a solid budgeting app if you want automatic bank syncing. Vaulra is the better choice if you want privacy-first budgeting without bank connections, granular visibility controls for shared finances, and a free price point.
