Budgeting vs expense splitting
Vaulra helps you plan spending before it happens. You create envelopes, allocate money, and track expenses against each allocation. Splitwise only records expenses after the fact and calculates who owes whom.
If you want to know "can we afford this?" before spending, Vaulra answers that question. Splitwise cannot.
Couple invite flow
Vaulra provides a first-class partner invite. One partner signs up, creates a shared budget, and sends an invite link. The invited partner completes a 2-step onboarding: they enter their name and preferred currency, then land directly in the shared budget with privacy controls.
Splitwise uses a group-expense model. You create a group, add members, and log expenses. There is no shared budget concept, no envelope budgeting, and no privacy controls over what group members can see.
Privacy controls
Vaulra lets the budget owner control visibility per envelope, per person. You can share the rent envelope while keeping personal spending hidden. Splitwise shows all group expenses to all group members. There is no way to hide individual transactions.
Pricing
Both Vaulra and Splitwise offer free tiers. Splitwise Pro is a paid upgrade for extra features. Vaulra is completely free with all features included.
Splitwise is useful for splitting one-off expenses with friends. Vaulra is a full budgeting system for ongoing shared finances with privacy controls, envelope budgeting, and a streamlined couple invite flow. If you want to budget together, not just split bills, Vaulra is the right tool.
